Climatic aridity increases temporal nestedness of invertebrate communities in naturally drying rivers

چکیده
Climate change is altering the water cycle globally, increasing frequency and magnitude of floods droughts. An outstanding question whether biodiversity responses to hydrological disturbance depend on background climatic context – if so, which contexts increase vulnerability disturbance. Answering this requires comparison organismal across environmental gradients. However, opportunities track disturbed communities against an undisturbed baseline remain rare. Here we gathered a global dataset capturing aquatic invertebrate river drying, includes 112 sites spanning gradient aridity. We measured effects drying taxonomic richness temporal ?-diversity (turnover nestedness components). also relative abundance invertebrates with strategies that confer resilience (or resistance) drying. Contrary our expectations, found recovered from similarly aridity gradient. The turnover component (i.e. species replacements over time) largely accounted for differences in community composition before versus after was associated greater nestedness-driven compositional changes at intermittent is, became subsets those These results show can explain variation same (drying), suggest increased will constrain regional scales. Further consideration hydroecological research may help improve predictions local impacts by identifying climate regions where are more less) sensitive extremes, including events.

Influence of Wood on Invertebrate Communities in Streams and Rivers
—Wood plays a major role in creating multiple invertebrate habitats in small streams and large rivers. In small streams, wood debris dams are instrumental in creating a step and pool profile of habitats, enhancing habitat heterogeneity, retaining organic matter, and changing current velocity. Beavers can convert sections of free-flowing streams into ponds and wetlands by killing trees and build...
متن کاملContext‐dependent resistance of freshwater invertebrate communities to drying
More freshwater ecosystems are drying in response to global change thereby posing serious threat to freshwater biota and functions. The production of desiccation-resistant forms is an important adaptation that helps maintain biodiversity in temporary freshwaters by buffering communities from drying, but its potential to mitigate the negative effects of drying in freshwater ecosystems could vary...
متن کاملImpact of spatial-temporal variations of climatic variables on summer maize yield in North China Plain
Summer maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the dominant crops in the North China Plain (NCP). Its growth is greatly influenced by the spatial-temporal variation of climatic variables, especially solar radiation, temperature and rainfall. The WOFOST (version 7.1) model was applied to evaluate the impact of climatic variability on summer maize yields using historical meteorological data from 1961 to 20...
متن کاملAlterations in flowering strategies and sexual allocation of Caragana stenophylla along a climatic aridity gradient
Plant can alter reproductive strategies for adaptation to different environments. However, alterations in flowering strategies and sexual allocation for the same species growing in different environments still remain unclear. We examined the sexual reproduction parameters of Caragana stenophylla across four climatic zones from semi-arid, arid, very arid, to intensively arid zones in the Inner M...

We examine global patterns of benthic macroinvertebrate biomass and its distribution among functional feeding guilds in marine intertidal cOnmlunities. Variation in ash-free dry biomass was related to physical variables (mean annual air and water temperatures, sediment grain size, intertidal slope, tide range and type, wave height and exposure) by least-squares regression analysis of data for 3...
